Our client, Salt of the Earth Natural, is a family-owned, B Corp certified manufacturer producing natural deodorants from its Chandlers Ford facility. With a strong international presence and a commitment to sustainability, the business supplies products to over 35 countries and continues to invest in both its people and operations.

They are looking for a creative, hands-on Formulation Scientist to develop and improve our natural deodorant and body care range. You’ll explore new ingredients and formulations, carry out testing and help shape the direction of new product development as the business expands into wider body care.

This is more than a laboratory role. You’ll have a real say in how the NPD process evolves, working with marketing, customer data and software engineers to help us develop the right products and improve how we work.

Formulation Scientist, the role:

Formulation and product development

• Develop new natural deodorant and body care formulations across a range of formats, including aqueous sprays and roll-ons, anhydrous sticks and balms.

• Improve existing formulations through testing, iteration and refinement.

• Explore new ingredients, formats and approaches, bringing fresh ideas and industry knowledge into the laboratory.

• Prepare formulation and safety data for Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) submission, working with the external safety assessor.

• Ensure formulations remain within the company’s certification requirements, including COSMOS Natural, Vegan Society and Leaping Bunny.

NPD process and collaboration

• Contribute ideas to improve the NPD process, from product selection and decision-making through to getting products to market.

• Work with marketing and customer data to understand what customers are looking for and feed those insights into product development.

• Keep formulation and raw material information organised, accurate and accessible.

• Collaborate with software engineers developing internal systems, bringing formulation expertise to help shape practical tools and processes.

Formulation Scientist, the person:

• Solid, hands-on cosmetic formulation experience, ideally including natural or COSMOS-certified products.

• Experience in deodorant or related personal care categories would be a strong advantage.

• A genuine interest in cosmetic formulation, new ingredients and exploring different approaches.

• Creativity and an enthusiasm for working with marketing and data to understand customer needs, not just what can be made in the laboratory.

• Precision and attention to detail, with the ability to explain clearly why a formulation choice works or fails.

A plus, but not essential:

• Working knowledge of EU and UK cosmetic regulations and the CPSR process.

• White-label or private-label product development experience.

• IT and software proficiency, including confidence with structured data, spreadsheets or databases, and an enthusiasm for learning new tools.
